College strike today | ||||
TT, Darjeeling, Sept. 10: The Student Union Council of Darjeeling Government College has called a 12-hour shut down tomorrow, demanding an immediate meeting of the governing body of the institution. “For the past six years, the governing body has not met nor solved various problems plaguing the college. We demand that the meeting be held before September 18 (when the month-long Puja vacation begins). We have called a 12-hour strike tomorrow to press for the demand,” said Dhanraj Tamang, the general secretary of the SUC affiliated to the Gorkha Janmukti Vidyarthi Morcha. The students also demonstrated in front of the district magistrate (DM)’s office today. Other demands of the SUC include filling up posts of 37 teachers and the principal. “For the past one decade, the college has been running without a full-fledged principal,” said Keshav Raj Pokhral, general secretary, Vidyarthi Morcha. Lalita Ahmed, the officer-in-charge of the college, said: “We have requested the DM who is the president of the governing body, to convene the meeting.” Surendra Gupta, DM, said he would hold the meeting “immediately”. TT, Alipurduar, Sept. 10: The Dooars-Terai Co-ordination Committee of the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad has decided to intensify its ongoing education strike, demanding the appointment of Hindi teachers in schools and colleges in the area. The agitation had spilled over into the streets with those opposing the strike, particularly students, blocking the NH31C at Gayerkata on Tuesday and yesterday. The situation turned ugly when the anti-strike supporters attacked police at Gayerkata and Durabari yesterday. A police vehicle was damaged by the mob, forcing the law enforcers to fire five rounds in the air and burst 10 rounds of tear-gas shells. Parishad leaders held a meeting at Nagrakata this afternoon and decided to continue with the strike. “We have decided to continue with our movement as the administration has not bothered to give us any written assurance. The Jalpaiguri district magistrate just sent us a copy of a letter she had written to the secretary of the school education department, detailing our demands,” John Barla, the president of the co-ordination committee, said after the meeting. Instead, the Parishad leader said, from tomorrow, Hindi students would come out in large numbers and set up pickets in front of all schools and colleges. “The district administration told us that force would be applied to stop the agitation. This is unfortunate,” said Barla. Gayerkata and Duramari remained peaceful today and barring a few elementary schools, all educational institutions functioned. However, with heavy police patrolling in the aftermath of the violence, there was thin attendance in the schools. In Duramari, shops downed shutters to protest against yesterday’s violence. However, after assurances from inspector-general of police K.L. Tamta that extra forces would be deployed in the area, the shops opened later in the afternoon. Gayerkata is 75km from here and Duramari is further 15km away. “The situation in Gayerkata and Duramari was absolutely normal today. We will not allow any forcible closure of schools tomorrow and we are ready to tackle any situation. A close watch is being kept in other places in the Dooars to avert any untoward incident,” said Tamta, who spent half-an-hour at Gayerkata. Administration intervenes to reopen schools under ABAVP siege SNS, JALPAIGURI, 10 SEPT: The Jalpaiguri district administration today finally acted to reopen some schools in the Dooars closed by the Akhil Bhartiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad for the past three days. The ABAVP school closure programme demanding transfer of non-Hindi speaking teachers from the Hindi medium schools of the Dooars and the Terai stepped on its fourth day today and some schools still continue to remain closed.
The administration’s initiative comes after guardians of students of the closed schools clashed with the police yesterday, blocked roads at Gairkata and threatened to intensify the agitation demanding reopening of the schools and police protection.
The district administration stepped in to reopen the Duramari Chandrakanta High School and the Gairkata Girls’ High School with police assistance. The student turnout was low in both schools today. The IG police, North Bengal, Mr KL Tamta today visited Duramari and Gairkata to check the law and order situation. “We have deployed sufficient police forces in both these areas to keep the situation under control. We are trying to organize a meeting between the people and the district administration to normalise the situation,” Mr Tamta said.
Most schools in the Dooars, however, continue to remain closed due to the ABAVP shutdown. Some primary schools in remote areas of the Dhupguri block where the ABAVP does not have much presence functioned normally.
At Malbazaar, the ABAVP supporters today engaged in an altercation with the guardians of Malbazaar Adarshaya Vidya Bhavana and finally closed the school. At Meteli block, several students blocked the National Highway 31 near Meteli for over 3 hours demanding immediate interference of the district administration to reopen the schools. In Odlabari, the ABAVP today forcefully closed the Sunil Dutta Smriti Balika Vidyalaya School after an argument with the guardians.
The SDO Jalpaiguri, Mr Santanu Mukherjee claimed that the ABAVP has withdrawn its strike from the Bengali medium schools. “But, they are continuing their strike in the Hindi medium schools. We expect them to withdraw the programme soon,” the SDO said. The ABAVP leadership is firm on its stand. According to the ABAVP Dooars Terai Coordination Committee secretary Mr Rajesh Lakra, the district administration was yet to respond positively to their demand. JET STRIKE GROUNDS BUDDHA IN SILIGURI IE, Kolkata, 11 Sep:Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattcharjee was stranded today in Siliguri as the Jet flight he was scheduled to board for Kolkata from Bagdogra airport had to be cancelled because of the ongoing strike by Jet Airways pilots. The chief minister then headed back to at the government bungalow at Mongpung near Siliguri, where he has been putting up for the last three days. As a result, Bhattcharjee will not be able to attend a scheduled programme at Rabindra Sadan on Friday in which accomplished people belonging to Scheduled Caste sand Scheduled Tribes are to be felicitated. “There were other flights later but since they did not match with the chief minister’s programme, he preferred staying back. He will return on Friday morning,” a CM’s aide said. Bhattcharjee’s latest trip to Siliguri has not been without its share of small hurdles. On Tuesday, while the CM was returning to his Mongpung bungalow after addressing a rally for Siliguri civic polls, his convoy had to be stopped for half-an-hour in dark as a herd of elephants was seen blocking the road. Finally, it moved as the pachyderms left the road and entered the jungles. On Wednesday, the CM attended the meeting of North Bengal Development Council at Bhaktinagar near Darjeeling. In fact, this trip gave the chief minister the much-needed rest as he had not been keeping good health for the last 15 days. According to sources in the CM secretariat, the chief minister has been suffering from lung infection and he is having recurrent fevers. Preksha Sharma |
