Morcha to back Trinamul candidate
TT, Darjeeling, Nov. 3: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has decided to support the Trinamul Congress candidate for the November 7 Rajgunj Assembly bypoll, “taking into account the changing political situation in Bengal”.
The Morcha had a tactical understanding with the Congress-Trinamul combine during the recent elections to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation and Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad but this is the first time that the hill party has clearly hinted that it is wooing the Opposition block which has been sweeping across Bengal.
The Morcha, which had an understanding with the BJP in the last Lok Sabha elections, has decided to bypass the saffron party’s candidate in Rajgunj.
“We have decided to support the Trinamul Congress candidate, Khageswar Roy, taking into account the changing political situation in Bengal. Our local leaders have worked out this arrangement, which has been endorsed by our central committee,” said Roshan Giri, Morcha general secretary, ruling out that the decision had been taken at the highest level.
The Morcha has decided to back an independent candidate Wilson Champramary for the Kalchini by-election but the decision taken for Rajgunj, where there is some support for the party, has raised eyebrows.
The Morcha has not immediately announced that it will dump the BJP. “We are only taking about the Rajgunj seat,” said Giri, when asked if this was an indication of a future tie-up. Asked if the state BJP had sought the Morcha’s support in Rajgunj, Giri said at least he had not received any such request.
However, Bimal Gurung, Morcha president, while addressing a gathering on the second foundation day of the party on October 7, had said if the BJP or Jaswant Singh (Darjeeling MP) failed to raise Gorkhaland consistently in Parliament, he would definitely have a re-look at the alliance with the BJP. He had also said the Morcha was not averse to going with the Congress in the days to come.
