GJMM gears up to celebrate foundation day

SNS, KURSEONG, 6 OCT: The Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha has decided to organise a major rally throughout the Darjeeling Hills tomorrow to observe its second foundation day. Besides, it would also host several cultural and traditional functions in the hills to observe the day. Preparations are on across the hills by different associations and organizations for the celebrations. The GJMM is distributing party-flags to the shops and houses, which would be hoisted on the rooftops to celebrate the day tomorrow.

A GJMM core committee member, Mrs Prabha Chettri said that Naari Morcha activists have been busy for the past two days preparing traditional delicacies at the Kurseong community. The delicacies would be sent to Darjeeling. She also said items from the Gorkha cuisine would be prepared and distributed among the people at Kurseong tomorrow.
Hill schools turn 130 - Plan for alumni reunion

RAJEEV RAVIDAS TT, Kalimpong, Oct. 6: The alumni of Victoria Boys’ School and Dow Hill School will come together in Darjeeling and Kurseong to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the institutions from October 30 to November 1.

The three-day grand reunion will be inaugurated by ex-Victorian Manish Kumar — director of development project, Unicef, Delhi — at Chowrastha in Darjeeling.

Victoria Boys’ School has classes from III to X and is only for the boys as the name denotes. In Dow Hill School, both boys and girls study together till Class III, but only girls are allowed from IV to X. The two institutions are the only government-owned ICSE residential schools in Bengal.

Manoj Rana, the secretary of the North Bengal and Sikkim chapter of Victoria and Dow Hill Alumni Association (Vadha), said the idea of holding the inaugural programme in Darjeeling was to involve the entire people of the hills in the celebration of two of the oldest institutions in Darjeeling district.

“The schools, we believe, deserve to be granted some sort of heritage status for their contribution in the field of education over the past 130 years,” he added.

On the first day, students of various schools in Darjeeling will present different cultural programmes. Besides, an inter-school marathon will also be held. The celebration will be shifted to the picturesque campuses of the two schools, 3km above Kurseong town, the next day.

Dow Hill will pay host to a musical jamboree featuring famous artistes in the hills on October 31 evening.

“We expect that about 300 ex-students from across the country and abroad, particularly neighbouring Nepal, will attend the three-day celebrations,” said Rana.

The grand reunion will end on November 1 with an Autumn Ball at Dow Hill in the evening. The ball will be preceded by a seminar at Victoria in the morning. “The present principals, staff and students of the schools, too, are looking forward to celebrating the anniversary with us,” said the Vadah secretary.

The two schools were set up in 1879 by the British for the education of the children of government officials on the lines of public schools in England.

Steam to pull hill toy train again

Vivek Chhetri, TT, Darjeeling, Oct. 6: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway’s joy rides will again have the familiar hoot of the steam engines from October 19.

Since September 23, the DHR has been using diesel engines for the joy rides, much to the chagrin of hill tour operators who have termed the move as a betrayal of its promise.

Subrata Nath, director, DHR, had claimed that they had never committed a steam engine for the joy ride on Darjeeling-Ghum route.

But tour operators in Darjeeling pointed out that www.dhr.in, the hill railway’s official website, said three locomotives would be pulled by the heritage B-Class steam engines.

“The official website suggests that the toy trains will be run on steam. But diesel engines are now used for the rides. Many foreign clients refused to travel on a train pulled by a diesel engine,” said Suresh Periwal, chairman, Indian Association of Tour Operators’ north Bengal and Sikkim chapter.

Even though the website could not be accessed this afternoon, Periwal claimed that he had with him the downloaded pages of the DHR’s website.

“I have a copy of the saved page. In the time-table section of the website, the DHR has clearly maintained that only steam engines would be used to haul the trains. It is based on these information that foreigners visit Darjeeling for a steam engine joy ride,” said Periwal.

The DHR in a letter to the tour operators has clarified that diesel engines are being used primarily to pre-empt any effort by coal labourers to disrupt the joy rides by calling strikes during the tourism season and secondly to accommodate more tourists on the train.

Nath had said the diesel engine could pull four bogies whereas only three rakes could be attached to the steam engine.

“Incidentally, two trips of steam hauled joy ride can carry a maximum of Rs 100 tourists whereas diesel hauled joy ride can clear 150 tourists in two trips. I am glad to say that the two diesel hauled trips are running 100 percent since 27.09.2009,” said the letter by Nath.

Today, Nath said he had never stated that a commitment on the steam engine had not been made. “What I had said was that the fares for the steam and diesel rides was the same. We will be reintroducing steam rides after October 18,” he said over the phone from Siliguri.

Sikkim tech classes start, axe on 26

TT, Gangtok, Oct. 6: Classes resumed at the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology yesterday after almost a month since clashes broke out between boarders and day scholars on the campus.

Sikkim Manipal University vice-chancellor Brigadier (retd) Surjit Singh Pabla said according to the interim report of a seven-member committee constituted to probe the clash, 26 SMIT students, identified for their involvement in the violence, would be suspended.

“Of the 26 students, suspension orders for 17 have been issued and their guardians have been intimated about the decision,” the vice-chancellor said. Suspension orders for the remaining students were being processed, he added.

The suspensions range from two to four weeks. Pabla said several other students were yet to depose before the committee and final action would be taken after that. “Action against some more students in the future cannot be ruled out.”

The vice-chancellor said the SMU, to which SMIT is affiliated, while meting out punishment to the perpetrators had kept in mind the careers of the students.

The tech college authorities had suspended classes on September 8 after a volleyball match snowballed into a major clash and a full scale rioting. Police had to burst tear-gas shells and conduct lathicharge on the Majitar campus to dispel the warring students. The SMIT campus is near Rangpo, the town on the border with Bengal, 45km from here.

Pabla said a number of steps had been taken by the SMU in consultation with the Sikkim government to ensure that such incidents were not repeated. “A chief security officer and a chief hostel warden for the campus have been appointed. Brigadier (retd) S. R. Mazagavankar is the chief security officer for SMIT and he had joined duty in the third week of September.”

Fifteen private security guards have also been deployed on the campus. Pabla said teacher committees have been constituted to keep a watch on the activities of the students in the hostels and on the campus.

Most of the 2,500 boarders had started returning to their hostels from the end of September, SMIT sources said. There are about 4,000 students at SMIT.

Opp to send legal notice to Asok

SNS,SILIGURI, 6 OCT: The Trinamul Darjeeling district leadership has decided to send a legal notice to the state urban development minister and Siliguri MLA, Mr Asok Bhattacharya (in picture), who has alleged the Trinamul tried to bribe some Left Front councillors for support in the SMC Mayor election. The CPI-M leadership, however, challenged the Trinamul leadership to file a defamation suit. “Let them file a defamation suit, that would expose the truth,” CPI-M Darjeeling district secretariat member Mr Jibesh Sarkar said at a gathering today. “The Trinamul tried to bribe the only Forward Bloc and some CPI-M councillors,” he too alleged publicly. The Trinamool leadership demanded that Mr Bhattacharya should apologize for his statement. “The minister alleged without information that our party tried to bribe Left Front councillors. I would send a legal notice to the minister within a day or two,” the Trinamul Darjeeling district president, Mr Gautam Deb said at a press conference today. “Mr Bhattacharya has become the spokesperson for the Darjeeling district Congress, after the latter took the Left Front's support to capture the SMC Mayor post. If he has proof to the allegation, he should publish it,” Mr Deb claimed. Referring to the Congress’s claim that a written appeal would be sent to the Trinamool to join the SMC board, Mr Deb said: “We have not received any such letter and the Trinamul would not join the Congress in the SMC board. There is no question of joining the board after the SMC Mayor was elected with the Left Front’s support,” he added. The Trinamul would organise a mass convention to chalk out future programmes in Siliguri soon.

Cong wants action for SMC ‘deal’

SILIGURI, 6 OCT: The Congress in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts faces a crisis like never before organisationally. A cry has gone up to remove the party presidents of the two districts for their purported role in securing Left Front votes to corner the Siliguri Mayor post. While Miss Mamata Banerjee described her “poll partners (read Congress) a greedy lot” over the SMC fiasco, a section of Congress leadership has gone a step ahead to bring kickback charges against the two district presidents on the issue.

Add to that the state urban development and municipal affairs minister as well as the local CPI-M MLA Mr Asok Bhattacharya's graft charge against the Trinamul for Left Front votes to grab the SMC Mayor post and the picture of a very disturbing political exercise that had gone into the SMC election is complete. The electorate had not bargained for this.

While the debate continues for and against the Congress's role vis-a-vis the Siliguri Mayor episode, pockets of resistance have developed within the Congress with a section of party supporters loyal to one faction or the other demanding the two district president's scalp.

The demand may be current but the dissension is old and the turn of events has allowed the rebels a toe in through the door.

It is another question whether heads would roll or not as, the two district presidents Mr Shankar Malakar of Darjeeling and Mr Biswaranjan Sarkar of Jalpaiguri have been pointing heavenwards, not for manna, but to indicate, the responsibility of the contentious decision that gave the Congress the SMC Mayor post had come from the top.

The Congress high command has so far distanced itself from the episode and the middle command has made all kinds of noises except coming up with a clear answer to the plethora of questions the development has triggered. Although it is quite clear to all and sundry the decision could not have been taken locally but had come from the party bosses, a scapegoat could be the demand of the season in the end. ;Sudipta Chanda, SNS.

BGP strongly condemns Assam massacre
Himalayan Express,6 Oct, Gangtok: The apex body of the Indian Gorkha community, Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP) has strongly condemned the massacre of 12 innocent persons including 7 Nepali speaking persons by militants at Bhimjuli village, Sonitpur district in Assam.
Strongly condemning the incident in a press conference here today, BGP working president CK Shrestha and Prabin Khaling (National Excutative commitee Member from Sikkim) today slammed Assam government for failing to take appropriate preventive measures. Locals have alleged that that Assam government did not take the matter seriously even as the extortion activities of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants were going on in the area, said Mr. Shrestha. Yesterday also the militants had demanded a large sum of money from the residents of the Gorkha dominated area of Bhimjuli but the residents had resisted the militants and had demanded protection from the State government which led to massacre by the NDFB militants, he claimed.
“If the Assam government had taken the matter seriously by providing adequate security, lives of so many innocent people would have not been lost”, said the BGP working president. He further informed that the Assam State unit of BGP will be preparing a report on the massacre and meet the State government for compensation and proper security arrangements in the area.
The BGP central committee also demands an immediate intervention from the Centre, said Mr. Shrestha. He informed that a memorandum has already been faxed to the President and Prime Minister of India.
Mr. Shrestha warned that a nationwide protest will be launched by BGP if the government fails to make proper security arrangements for the Indian Gorkha community.
Meanwhile, the Assam State unit of BGP has called a 12 hour strike tomorrow at Sonitpur district to register its protest against the killings. Protest rallies will also be taken out by BGP in several areas of the district, it is informed.

Rs.1013 crore sanctioned for connecting Sevoke –Rangpo rail link

HE, Siliguri, October 4: Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee today laid the foundation for the country’s first multifunctional complex at Siliguri junction here today.
Mamata explained that Siliguri had been chosen as the first venue for setting up such a complex because the region in the north Bengal was one of the country’s most deprived and neglected areas.
A multifunctional complex is a big area, close to a station, having facilities like car parking, marketing, hotels, shops and railway complexes.
Pointing out that such a concept, when implemented, would help generate employment and foster development, she said she had plans of establishing a few more multifunctional complexes around the country.
Mamata also announced that Rs.1013 crore had been sanctioned and work programme readied for connecting Sevoke and Rangpo in Sikkim considering the tourism potential of the area. Presently Sikkim has no railway track.
