GJMM denies hand in Gurung attack
SNS, KURSEONG, 4 OCT: The All India Gorkha League president, Mr Madan Tamang today said that the GJMM had already gone into a clandestine agreement with the Centre and the state government regarding an autonomous Hill council and to suppress the people’s resentment over such a development, it is gearing up with its coercive machinery. Alluding to the 2 October incident in Kalimpong, the AIGL leader said that the reported attack on Mr Bimal Gurung was manifestation of the growing anger of the common Hill people against the party.
“Besides, the refusal of the people to don traditional dress during the festive season as directed by the GJMM leadership has confirmed the popular disenchantment with the dictatorial politics being indulged in by the GJMM,” Mr Tamang said.
However, rubbishing the AIGL leader's allegation, the GJMM spokesperson, Mr Harka Bahadur Chettri said that Mr Tamang was indulging in such motivated propaganda only to mislead the people.
“But the people are intelligent enough and they would not give credence to the false campaigning. The GJMM remains committed to the Gorkhaland state. Besides, there was no attack on Mr Gurung.
“A person in a drunken state mounted the platform apparently to felicitate the GJMM president. The volunteers intervened and consequently he started abusing in filthy language,” he said.
Notably, following the incident, the residences of the Kalimpong based AIGL leader, Mr Pratap Khati, the former Kalimpong municipality chairman, Mr CK Kumai and the former councillor, Mr Aditya Rai were ransacked allegedly by the GJMM supporters the same evening. The GJMM, however, denied having hands in such attacks. The GJMM general secretary, Mr Roshan Giri today said that the college students should don the traditional Gorkha attire from Monday to Wednesday every week. He was addressing a Press conference in Darjeeling. “The people should wear the same dress on 7 October the foundation day of the GJMM,” he added.
